Documentary
Year of production: 2002
After 16 years of exile in Bolivia, the Argentinian César Brie founded
the "Teatro de los Andes together with the Italian Paolo Nalli. The
ten-member theater group lives and works on a farm in Yotala, 15 km
from Sucre, and perform their plays in Latin America, Europe and North
America. The film shows the development and perfomance of their
adaption of Homer's "The Iliad, a story which César Brie combines with
his personal topic, the violence of the military dictatorship in
Argentina. It includes the disappearance of the sons and daughters of
the "Madres of Buenos Aires' Plaza de Mayo, and draws parallels to
Priamos, who is also fighting to get his dead son back. The play was
developed in a collaborative process, using music and dance from
Bolivia, Greece and India, and Bolivian combat rituals. The play
communicates an intensity which is universally understood.
