Distancia / Distance

Albena's brother Stilyan was only 17 years old when he took his own life on 30 December 1972. In the consequence, the family fell apart between accusations and feelings of guilt.
The father, a railway official of the Bulgarian regime, took the singletrack path of oblivion.
The mother lapsed into silence - for over 40 years. Albena began to draw to try to deal with the pain of losing her brother.

Today is Slatka, the mother of Albena, 89 years old. Now she wants to speak. The film condenses the distortions of time onto one family. Frame by frame, mother and daughter embark on a journey between the past and reality to come to terms with the death of their relative.
The two women confront the personal tragedy that should have remained taboo through ironclad silence.
They thus shed light on the repressed history of half a century in Bulgaria and find forgiveness for each other.
