LOCAL VIDEO NETWORKS OF THE 1980s AND 1990s IN BASEL

The project aims to look at local video networks in Basel, especially of the 1980s and 1990s, from different perspectives: Video as an involved medium, a documenting medium, and video art. In addition, questions of preservation and accessibility of video will be in focus.

Basel's creation of videos was organized in a cooperative way: With the founding of the “Videogenossenschaft“ Basel in 1979 or the VIA in 1988, cooperatives were formed that resulted in initiatives also in affiliated fields such as media and net art, performative arts, company formations and studio communities. VGB has repeatedly been a focal point for overarching shifts in the history of video throughout its 43-year history. The aim of the project is to examine local video networks, especially those of the 1980s and 1990s, from different perspectives.

18 Video Interviews, public event - symposium with screening, archive work and creation of digital copies of older video works for the FHNW HGK media library.
